Yesterday, hiking with ethanol I got close to visiting the epicenter of the 1989 quake, buried deep within a national park. Afterwards, sitting in the 120 Union coffee shop in Santa Cruz, while listening to some rollicking music, I found an epicenter of the free wireless movement...
but first a brief educational announcement: The Digibarn computer museum, based in Boulder Creek, Ca, is having an Open house saturday, April 24th. The grounds are beautiful, and inside the winding paths of the multi-level barn they have lots of way cool computers to commune with - everything from early word processors from wang and IBM, an actual kim-1, osbornes, the cromenco s-100 bus computers, apples, macs, oddball designs that never made it to production, and couple crays and a few hundred other historically significant machines.
The open house starts at 11AM, and space is limited, so apply to enter now. The museum is only about 10 miles from my house. I plan to ride my ebike up, if the weather holds!
On to the other epicenter.
The people behind ThirdBreak (the two I met last night were Cliff Skolnick (of apache.org fame) and Eric "Elf" Kellogg (formerly of hotwired)).
They are trying to do a good thing for the right reasons, and are very inspiring to talk to. I have an hour of talking to them on tape that I'm trying to decide what to do with, the troubles they are having with the City are fascinating.
They are an epicenter of the free wireless movement, inspired by the early principles of the internet and it's founders - to make something pure and good by helping people out of the office and into the open air, cafe's and other businesses around the community.
Me, I've made it my mission this summer to:
Bring the Net to the beach. Every member of IT and software engineer that I have met loves the idea, and I found out last night from Elf that in a month, maybe less, there will be wireless access to the net right off the Santa Cruz Wharf, near the volleyball courts.
Ahh... everyone could be spending time with family and friends, getting some sun, and exercise, and still get work done, on the beach....
